Johannesburg Pride 2008 |

Dressing up at Johannesburg Pride
The parade and party attract over 35,000 people - pretty good going considering that prior to Nelson Mandela's presidency, homosexuality was a crime. The country's immediate liberalisation of the sex laws reflected Mandela himself, who while in hiding employed a gay driver.
The Pride march and party on the final Saturday are preceded by a week-long extravaganza of cultural and club events, theatre and art exhibitions. The march starTs and ends at the fair site at Zoo Lake - the perfect forum for Pride revellers to party away into the small hours.
The Johannesburg Pride is significant not only because it increases gay visibility in a country emerging into tolerance but also because it brings the black and white communities closer together.
