During the festival, the cliff tops around the bay are packed with eager spectators, often with beer in hand and a convivial and celebratory atmosphere abounds. Quiter spots can be found a short way out of the town and a tip is to get up early in the morning when there are less people, waters are often calmer and the whales come close to shore. The experience of viewing these creatures as they cavort and leap within easy view is indescribable and unmissable. If you're nature lover, it will keep you happy for days!
In addition to the whales, if more were needed the festival offers visitors and residents the best of theatre and music from around the country and a host of environmental activities. The very popular Arts Ramble is a unique opportunity to visit artists at their studios and galleries and see them at work.
For sports enthusiasts there is The Whale Run Half Marathon and the Wildside Spring Surf Festival incorporating the SA Kneeboarding Championship.
All visitors wil be able to enjoy the spectacular Hermanus environment the the full with the assistance of community guides providing information on the whales, guided whale watching walks, guided Fynbos walks, treks with Nature Conservationist guides and more. Every beach nearby is a unique natural phenomena and all are equally spectacular!
